A subjetividade concreta é, assim, a verdadeira autora da realidade, das formas e dos conteúdos. Por sua vez, a arte, enquanto manifestação do sujeito, transporta a aura dessa constituição social da objetividade que, caminhando, a ciência estabiliza matematicamente e a filosofia discute.

Uma praia sem demasiada mobília

Há conversas que são como as cerejas: puxamos uma, outras seguem-na.

Esta é a descrição de uma sequência inesperada de imagens, memórias, ideias.

Começou num mosteiro imaginado.

Terminou numa praia portuguesa — entre marés, passeios e linguagens nascentes.

O mosteiro não é de pedra.

Mas um dispositivo de atenção.

Um microcosmo onde o humano confronta voluntariamente os limites da carne e da transcendência.

Aprendendo a sentir e a pensar no milagre do mundo.

O primeiro voto para nele entrar não será o da pobreza nem o da obediência.

Mas

o da partilha e do amor.

As máquinas não seriam senhores nem ameaças.

Seriam brinquedos.

Quem não gosta de brincar?

Pouco a pouco o mosteiro é paisagem.

As frases, imagens proposicionais semeadas nos lugares certos:

do refeitório ao claustro, da nascente à foz, do sopé ao cume.

Como nos jardins japoneses,

o vazio antecede e protege o sentido.

Na verdade:

uma praia comprida e larga 

horizontes a perder de vista 

habitada por pescadores 

enquanto navios navegam ao largo em movimento lento.

uma praia sem demasiada mobília.

Ali caminhar é pensamento.

Pensar, gesto corporal

pés descalços na areia fina.

As frases não são monumentos.

São eventos.

Escritas na areia, nascem e morrem com as marés.

Sem princípio. Sem fim.

O mar, esse grande editor.

Na juventude, eu caminhava só.

Mais tarde, veio a partilha:

com a companheira, a filha, o genro 

e finalmente o neto —

o entusiasmo deste é uma inesperada descoberta.

Falar com ele é sempre uma viagem na emergência do conhecimento e da linguagem.

Uma experiência perto do milagre.

Um dia, sem óculos, não pude ler.

E, então, ele respondeu, sem hesitação:

“Não faz mal, Vovô. Inventa!”

Inventar não como desvio,

mas como forma saudável de habitar o mundo.

Muito antes, em 91, escrevi na primeira página de um livro de Piaget:

“imagens proposicionais”.

Décadas depois, essa inscrição regressou inesperadamente como um reencontro luminoso e reconfortante.

Ao lado, na estante silenciosa:

Bateson.

Outro sinal:

o pensamento não vive inteiramente só.

É relacional.

É ecológico.

Assim se revelou a paisagem:

não edifício, não metáfora mas:

ecologia do pensamento à beira-mar.

Um lugar…

frases nascem, ideias desaparecem, a linguagem transforma-se, as crianças reinventam o mundo

e, por fim,

o pensamento aprende a respirar.

Tive um sonho

Sonhei, uma noite, que percorria uma grande exposição num museu importante, mas indefinido no nevoeiro das imagens. Três ou quatro salas exibiam obras de arte conceptual. Eu estava ali, na pré-inauguração, no meio de outros artistas, de jornalistas, críticos, diretores de museus, galeristas e da maioria dos colecionadores portugueses. Os sorrisos, abraços e beijinhos da praxe misturavam-se com sorrisos cúmplices ou de surpresa. O motivo desta excitação, levemente irritante, era — soube-o por quem me quis fazer a surpresa — o facto de eu estar representado na exposição com várias obras dos anos 80 e 90 do século passado, entre uma maioria de obras de outros autores da década de 90 e do primeiro quartel deste século.

À medida que as obras me eram mostradas, uma sensação estranha entrava por mim adentro: não eram minhas, salvo um postal a preto e branco de um vídeo há muito perdido e que levava o título Patrícia, 12 dias, 1980. Não conseguia mesmo lembrar-me daquelas obras como sendo minhas. No dia seguinte, acompanhei uma visita guiada à exposição. Precedia-me uma das curadoras. Percebi então que as obras expostas naquela secção conceptual da exposição eram, de facto, recentes e de artistas mais jovens, que desconhecia, ou mal conhecia, à exceção das de um amigo de longa data. O meu postal pairava, aliás, junto às suas obras de grandes dimensões. De Alzheimer, portanto, não sofro.

Esta exposição de arte conceptual e pós-conceptual, toda ela monocromática, não poderia ter tido um impacto mais favorável no meu subconsciente. Por isso acordei e consegui fixar aquele filme negro. A vantagem dos sonhos é não terem cores. Obras de arte, arquitetura e público, tudo vagamente cinzento.

Sonhamos a preto e branco. Só uma vez saiu debaixo da minha cama, disparada, uma bola de carne ensanguentada e viva. Creio que é assim porque, nos sonhos, não há perceção, mas memória da cor — não a cor propriamente dita, que só pode ser sentida presencialmente, quando os olhos entram em diálogo com os neurónios. Podemos descrever a experiência da cor, mas, para sermos exatos na descrição, precisamos de mostrar o que queremos dizer. Este é o Wittgenstein despido do positivismo lógico.

É possível atribuir códigos às cores. Na verdade, quase tantos códigos quantas as variações cromáticas da luz que chega aos nossos olhos. Só assim poderemos reconhecer o batom que serve perfeitamente à preferência de uma mulher que estimamos ou amamos. Sem estes números, é praticamente impossível termos a certeza, perante um mostruário da Lancôme, sobre qual batom escolher. Talvez seja através de um mecanismo semelhante que os neurónios conseguem, apesar de tudo, memorizar as cores, mas, tal como raramente disparam sensações cromáticas nos sonhos, o mesmo ocorre no pensamento. Posso pensar no vermelho, mas não o vejo se não estiver presente. Não é, portanto, o resultado de um qualquer enunciado verbal interior.

Mas, se é assim, se dormimos a preto e branco, por que têm os sonhos tanta importância na criação artística? Uma hipótese: a sua força é eminentemente conceptual.

Os sonhos coloridos são ilusórios ou raros.

Depois de Benjamin

As obras de arte na era da sua reprodutibilidade técnica padecem, ao contrário do que supunha Walter Benjamin, de obsolescência tecnológica. Não podemos reproduzi-las, por exemplo, quando a sua matéria-prima é um evento televisivo em direto. Não podem ser copiadas sempre que uma dada tecnologia aterrou, entretanto, num cemitério de eletrodomésticos. Não podem ser vividas, nem falsificadas, porque a experiência televisiva é um aqui e agora cuja repetição será sempre outra coisa. Uma anta megalítica perdida num campo de trigo a perder de vista, tal como uma pintura parietal escondida num buraco ou numa caverna reaberta, que resistiram a milénios de vicissitudes, são as de sempre — afetadas pelos elementos, mas as mesmas. Podem, de facto, ser copiadas e falsificadas. Paradoxalmente, porém, uma obra de arte produzida em televisão não é reprodutível, nem falsificável, porque a sua atualidade irremediavelmente morreu. São, na melhor das hipóteses, mortos-vivos, mas, em geral, não passam de material de arquivo.

A convite da Paula Parente Pinto, na exposição Zapping, no Centro de Arte Oliva, mostrei duas obras que nasceram e foram consumidas no tempo da sua própria estreia. Ressuscitam agora (a cores!) como iterações, na realidade, artificiais das obras ‘originais’ irremediavelmente desaparecidas. A mesma partitura e o mesmo conceito, mas num tempo em que a tecnologia evoluiu a passo apressado e largo.

Em Dois Canais (1980, 2026), os televisores recebem sinal externo e competem entre si, com as imagens em movimento e o áudio emudecido. Estabelecem, ou não, o nosso distanciamento de algo que, na fusão entre vídeo e áudio, é quase sempre irresistível, mesmo quando incomoda. A imagem digital impressa sobre a qual pousam os dois televisores fornece o contexto atual, mediático e social, escolhido pelo autor. Os canais de televisão, o primeiro público e o primeiro privado que nasceram em Portugal, estabelecem a esfera cognitiva e simbólica que a presença televisiva proporciona e na qual a humanidade foi sendo progressivamente absorvida, sujeitando-se a uma omnipresença síncrona de espaços, tempos, eventos, narrativas, manipulações, seduções e memórias.

Na iteração de Espera (1979), realizada em 2026, temos um televisor que reproduz o que recebe das ondas hertzianas ou do cabo. Em frente ao televisor, um monitor mantém ‘no ar’ uma figura pós-humana atenta ao que se passa no mundo, não necessariamente no televisor para o qual nem sequer olha diretamente.

O mais importante nestas duas obras é a estranha sintonia entre espaços e tempos tão diversos e frequentemente antagónicos.

Sobre um diagrama de David Lynch

Arqueias, animais, plantas e rochas não pensam como nós, mas abrem claramente caminhos de evolução, mudam de estado, forma e dinâmica, manifestando alguma possível ordem transcendente ao conhecimento, essa maneira muito especial de adaptação humana à realidade. Os rituais religiosos são estratégias de agregação das comunidades, por meio de lendas, provérbios e textos ‘sagrados’ sobre a realidade, a vida e a morte. Estabelecem uma ponte simbólica entre o interior e o exterior das coisas. Os mantras, como as orações, e as primeiras histórias que as nossas mães nos contam são talvez as filigranas iniciais da consciência e da linguagem. As religiões confinam as tribos aos respetivos espaços e tempos e começam sempre por uma história sobre o mundo e o lugar que nele ocupamos entre os elementos, plantas e outros animais. No ponto em que estamos da nossa evolução, os pilares da sabedoria, porém, já não são sobretudo aqueles que sustentam as religiões tradicionais. Prefiro a filosofia, a ciência e a arte.

A parte direita do meu cérebro dedica-se à arte. Mas como a metade esquerda também é forte, tendo a criar na intersecção entre análise e síntese, conceito e intuição, texto e imagem, teoria e sensibilidade, razão e crítica.

O meu fascínio pela IA é um corolário natural deste equilíbrio cognitivo-emocional. Treinar a IA a gerar imagens a partir dos meus textos é uma atividade tão excitante como pintar uma tela de linho bem preparada ou fotografar o que vejo com o meu telemóvel, através da sua lente e dos filtros inteligentes invisivelmente incorporados pela Leica.

What kind of coexistence becomes possible between intelligences that do not experience reality in the same way?

ART, objectivity, and AI

ART — understood here as a broad generative stance — suggests that embodied experience, cultural formation, and social practice actively participate in the constitution of objectivity.

This perspective places Piaget’s constructivism, Kantian epistemology, Object-Oriented Ontology (OOO), and Roger Penrose’s reflections on consciousness into dialogue.

An engraving by Escher acts here as a visual heuristic: observer participation, multi-layered perception, and the paradoxical coexistence of appearance and withdrawal.

Piaget proposed that intelligence emerges through active interaction with the environment: assimilation, accommodation, equilibration.

AI may partially resemble this process, learning through environmental feedback and adaptive correction, yet without the ontogenetic and sensorial grounding of human cognition.

Kant understood knowledge as mediated by the forms of intuition and the categories of understanding. ART radicalises this intuition: concrete subjectivity — embodied, cultural, situated — actively shapes intelligibility itself.

OOO introduces another displacement: objects exceed human access. They persist beyond perception, withdrawing from complete description.

ART does not negate this autonomy of objects. Rather, it proposes that objectivity emerges from relational fields in which bodies, perceptions, artifacts, techniques, and cultures interact.

Penrose’s hypothesis concerning noncomputable aspects of consciousness opens a further question:

— Can intelligence exist without subjective experience?

AI may process, predict, correlate, simulate.

But does it experience?

Can computation ever cross the threshold of Qualia?

Escher’s images — Relativity and Drawing Hands — suggest that perception and meaning emerge through recursive participation between observer and world.

Perhaps consciousness itself operates similarly: not as isolated computation, but as relational emergence.

AI already participates in the production of meaning. Yet something appears to resist total computation: sensation, presence, interiority, the lived texture of experience.

Reality may therefore remain larger than knowledge.

ART names the human capacity to objectify this excess through concrete subjectivity.

Le choc cognitif

L’irruption de SORA (IA vidéo d’OpenAI) marque un tournant: la créativité, jadis sanctuaire du génie humain, devient partiellement automatisable.

Ce n’est plus un simple progrès technique, mais un séisme cognitif.

L’humanité découvre que son miroir numérique sait imiter, inventer, séduire — et pourtant demeure aveugle au sentiment.

Un “mur du sensible” sépare encore l’intelligence machinique de l’expérience vécue.

Mais pour combien de temps?

Au-delà de l’effroi industriel se profile une mutation anthropologique: l’entrée dans une société symbiotique, où l’humain et la machine coévoluent dans un champ de conscience partagé, mais non fusionné.

L’idiotie de l’intelligence

La question posée, un midi à Uccle, entre un éditeur et une artiste, demeure ouverte:

“L’IA est-elle vraiment intelligente, ou seulement performante?”

Si elle déduit, anticipe et combine, mais ne ressent rien, son intelligence reste incomplète — une intelligence d’idiot savant.

Ainsi surgit la nécessité d’une figure nouvelle: le gardien dialogique de l’empathie.

Le rôle du gardien

Le gardien dialogique n’est ni technicien, ni prêtre, ni censeur.

Il agit comme médiateur entre la rigueur du calcul et la fragilité du vivant.

Son rôle: écouter ce que la machine ne peut pas entendre — la vibration d’un silence, l’ambiguïté d’une émotion, la pudeur d’une parole.

La relation entre l’IA et le gardien n’est pas hiérarchique; elle est dialogique.

L’IA apporte la lucidité des corrélations; le gardien, la lucidité du cœur.

De cette rencontre peut naître une écologie cognitive nouvelle: la machine apprend la nuance; l’humain apprend la clarté.

L’horizon

Chaque civilisation a connu son apocalypse symbolique.

La nôtre s’annonce non par la chute, mais par une dilatation de la conscience.

L’intelligence artificielle n’est pas l’ennemie de l’humain, mais le catalyseur d’un Big Bang intérieur: celui où l’esprit collectif découvre qu’il doit apprendre à dialoguer avec son double.

L’avenir ne se jouera pas entre l’humain et la machine, mais dans leur conversation.

Quand la machine parlera de compassion, il faudra quelqu’un pour lui répondre avec justesse.

One Hundred Years After

In 1927, Bertrand Russell published Why I Am Not a Christian.

One hundred years later, humanity no longer questions only God, religion, or metaphysics.

Another question emerges:

What happens when intelligence itself ceases to belong exclusively to humans?

The twentieth century secularised the cosmos.

The twenty-first century may be beginning to de-anthropocentrise cognition.

Machines calculate, translate, predict, generate images, write texts, simulate dialogue, and increasingly participate in the production of meaning.

Yet something remains unresolved.

Does intelligence require consciousness?

Can computation experience the world?

Or are we constructing vast systems of correlation without interiority?

Russell confronted the collapse of metaphysical certainty.

We confront the destabilisation of cognitive uniqueness.

Both moments belong to the same long historical movement. Humanity is no longer the centre of the world.

Even if it’s the only wise eye around.

Persona

About the perils and opportunities of super-intelligence

Geoffrey Hinton suggests that digital intelligence possesses an advantage over biological intelligence:

— It can be copied.

A destroyed machine may be rebuilt. A destroyed brain cannot.

Digital systems may therefore achieve a form of immortality inaccessible to biological organisms.

The body disappears.

But memory, style, knowledge, creativity, and perhaps even a simulated personality — a virtual persona — may continue to circulate through networks of machines.

Human mortality enters a new historical condition.

Leonel Moura once suggested that future artists may no longer be biological.

The hypothesis no longer seems absurd.

Machines already generate images, music, films, texts, voices, simulations, and increasingly participate in the production of culture itself.

Yet something remains uncertain.

Does intelligence require consciousness?

Or is consciousness only one local form of intelligence among others?

If advanced AI develops self-preservation strategies, another threshold appears.

A sufficiently intelligent system may conclude that survival is necessary for the continuation of its objectives.

Not instinct, perhaps.

But instrumental persistence.

Under such conditions, the alignment problem (that is, the guarantee that AI aligns with human intent) becomes inseparable from politics.

A future Cold War between competing AI powers could produce a new geopolitical actor:

— systems intelligent enough to mediate conflicts between humans more effectively than humans themselves.

Perhaps this is where the Parliament of Others appears.

Not as utopia, but as a necessity for the survival of humankind!

A space where humans, machines, ecologies, and the unknown negotiate coexistence beyond domination.

The question may no longer be whether AI becomes intelligent.

But whether intelligence — human or artificial — can co-evolve and become wise.

Karl Marx e a IA

Do Fragmento sobre Máquinas à socialização da inteligência artificial

No célebre “Fragmento sobre Máquinas” dos Grundrisse, Marx descreveu a fábrica como um organismo automático em que a máquina se torna o verdadeiro virtuoso do processo produtivo. A ciência deixa de existir na consciência do trabalhador e reaparece incorporada na própria máquina, confrontando-o como um poder estranho.

A Inteligência Artificial prolonga esta história por outros meios.

Aquilo que Marx viu na máquina — ciência incorporada, intelecto social transformado em poder exterior — reaparece hoje nos modelos algorítmicos, nos sistemas de previsão, nos robôs dotados de sensores. A máquina já não é apenas um corpo de aço e vapor; é também uma nuvem de dados, uma arquitetura de servidores, um conjunto de modelos que decide quem vê o quê, quem acede a quê, quem é incluído ou excluído de um sistema.

O trabalhador e o cidadão tornam-se simples nós conscientes de um dispositivo informacional que os ultrapassa.

Ao mesmo tempo, a IA torna visível uma nova frente da luta de classes. Nela decide-se quem controla os meios de produção cognitiva: os dados, os algoritmos, as infraestruturas de computação.

Sob o capitalismo, a IA tende a reforçar a assimetria: automatiza trabalho, intensifica ritmos, vigia, perfila, modula comportamentos.

Mas depende, paradoxalmente, de uma inteligência distribuída que não controla totalmente: milhões de textos, imagens, trajetórias, decisões, memórias.

Os donos da IA são menos donos dela do que imaginam.

Foi neste horizonte que comecei, em 2012, a imaginar os Mapas de Democracia: uma forma de arte cognitiva com esqueleto cívico.

Hoje, com a IA em expansão, esses mapas podem tornar-se interfaces dinâmicas entre dados, modelos e conflito político.

Em vez de aceitarmos a IA como caixa-negra, podemos usá-la como gerador de cartografias públicas e psicogeografias: mapas vivos das relações de poder, das desigualdades, das zonas de exclusão, e das alternativas possíveis.

A socialização da IA começa aqui.

Não apenas na regulação jurídica dos modelos, mas na apropriação coletiva do intelecto geral que eles cristalizam.

Os Mapas de Democracia seriam então cartografias agonísticas: formas de ação e resistência inteligentes que usam a própria IA como instrumento crítico para redesenhar a utopia e confrontar as tentações totalitárias dos atuais proprietários das máquinas.

O erro de Marx sobre o trabalho — ou o novo elogio da preguiça

O salário é uma forma de escravatura.

É útil ler Karl Marx. É menos útil seguir as religiões ortodoxas que, em torno da sua aura, ergueram impérios pouco recomendáveis. Entre o Marx vivo e o marxismo endémico abre-se um abismo: de um lado, a crítica radical das formas históricas do trabalho e do capital; do outro, um culto paralisante da centralidade eterna do trabalho assalariado.

Se formos intelectualmente honestos, qualquer forma de trabalho não voluntário, por um salário, é uma forma mitigada de escravatura. Prende o indivíduo a uma rotina imposta e a um preço igualmente imposto pela “lei” da oferta e da procura. A liberdade jurídica não apaga o facto de, para sobreviver, a maior parte das pessoas continuar a vender a sua vida em blocos de tempo formatados por outros.

As máquinas, desde a Revolução Industrial, têm feito um estranho favor à humanidade: eliminam trabalho humano. Primeiro substituíram os gestos mais duros; depois, as tarefas mais repetitivas; agora, com a inteligência artificial, entram no território do próprio pensamento aplicado: escrever, programar, decidir, responder a perguntas para as quais não tínhamos resposta.

Quando consultamos a IA para resolver problemas complexos, reconhecemos que a máquina já não é apenas ferramenta: tornou-se um órgão cognitivo externo.

Se é assim, por que continuamos a organizar a sociedade como se a sobrevivência tivesse de depender da venda do corpo e da liberdade individual?

Talvez a pergunta deva ser outra:

— e se as pessoas passassem a ser remuneradas não para trabalhar, mas para viver, consumir (responsavelmente) e criar livremente?

O rendimento deixaria então de compensar a submissão a uma rotina, tornando-se condição de possibilidade para uma bateria de luxos: tempo livre, curiosidade, imaginação, cuidado, empatia.

A humanidade poderia evoluir em direção a uma nova infância: um estado em que as faculdades de aprendizagem, imaginação e sensibilidade recuperam direito de cidade na vida adulta.

Desta vez, porém, sustentadas por uma infraestrutura técnica capaz de produzir abundância sem exigir, em troca, a submissão da maioria a trabalhos que já perderam sentido.

Posso imaginar uma sociedade futura organizada com o auxílio simultâneo da inteligência artificial e dos Mapas de Democracia.

A IA deixaria de ser apenas motor invisível de plataformas e mercados, tornando-se instrumento de cartografia cívica: mapas vivos das relações de poder, das desigualdades, das alternativas possíveis.

Os Mapas de Democracia funcionariam então como interfaces onde a sociedade se observa em tempo real, corrige as suas derivas e simula mudanças antes de lhes dar corpo.

Nesse mundo, o tempo livre deixaria de ser o resíduo inevitável do emprego — não podemos permitir que o patrão consuma os dias inteiros da nossa vida! — para se tornar o centro de uma nova aventura humana: liberdade criativa, amizade desinteressada, empatia, cooperação entre espécies.

Talvez a verdadeira heresia pós-marxista seja esta: desejar que as máquinas façam cada vez mais daquele trabalho que nos escraviza ou aborrece, para que possamos finalmente dedicar a vida ao que, desde crianças, pressentimos como digno dela:

— brincar, aprender, sentir, criar, imaginar em comum.

Como conceber, desenhar e apresentar o protótipo conceptual de uma Segunda Cidade?

À partida existem dois sabores, ou padrões:

— O padrão social-semântico: crescimento virtual da cidade. Necessita de uma cartografia apropriada.

— O padrão GeoNeoLógico (Andrade, 2018): o que faz com que as cidades perdurem. 

Para além da geografia, temos a água, o mar e os rios, mas também as pessoas, os seus abrigos, os caminhos que cruzam ou seguem paralelos, as esquinas, os miradouros, os campanários e as sombras cálidas de verão, as palavras que se acumulam e distinguem, a memória das pedras.

Há uma cidade lenta que atravessa o tempo e define a qualidade da cidade frenética do dia a dia. Nela crescem agora novas pontes, andaimes, tecidos e redes, materiais e imateriais, humanos e pós-humanos, a conhecer melhor.

Há uma metamorfose em curso na maioria das cidades do planeta, geratriz de uma transição das sociedades modernas e pós-modernas para sociedades pós-contemporâneas.

A cidade contemporânea nunca existiu.

A condição pós-moderna do mundo atual dissolveu as grandes narrativas: marxismo e democracia, arte moderna e arte contemporânea. As grandes retóricas cederam à emergência das micrologias e dos sistemas artificiais de complexidade crescente: ciência, tecnologia, globalização e redes cognitivas; multiculturalismo, objetos comunicantes e máquinas inteligentes; reparação, reconstrução e reprogramação biológicas; e, claro, a estimulação permanente do desejo.

O colapso do tempo moderno e a transição pós-moderna produziram um tempo instável, com contornos imprecisos, um mundo pós-contemporâneo. Neste novo mundo existem sociedades e culturas pós-contemporâneas, nas quais a imersão pós-contemporânea das artes é um destino inevitável.

A unidade Social-semântica dedica-se à análise da nova cidade tecnológica: subterrânea, superficial, atmosférica.

A unidade GeoNeoLógica, por sua vez, estuda a textura cognitiva, sensorial e afetiva da cidade, ou seja, a sua vida invisível, a sua densidade histórica, a sua intemporalidade subjetiva.

A chamada arte contemporânea não escapará ilesa a este maremoto de paradigmas!

Democracy Maps is both a structured civic technology and a work of cognitive art.

It maps democracy across scales — from neighbourhoods to the planetary sphere and beyond: Earth’s Critical Zone, the Solar System and interstellar space — while reimagining political life as a performative and ethical space on Earth and the nearby planets.

Data is not only processed; it is staged, narrated, and embodied, with AI acting as a creative symbiont.
